The First King’s Last Night: Saul and The Witch of Ein Dor


One of the least known stories of Tanakh and one of the strangest: King Saul, on the eve of his final battle consults a necromancer to raise the prophet Samuel from the dead and to find out his fate. Using a combination of midrash, medieval commentaries, Israeli poetry, and rigorous analysis of the text on its own terms, this class looks at the Book of Samuel, and the life and legacy of the first King of Israel from the perspective of his last night alive.
