Chazal and the Shoah


We often feel that after 1945 we are starting with a blank page of how to respond. Yet, as Isaiah Berlin once wrote that ‘the Jewish people have suffered from too much history and not enough geography’. We have spent millennia thinking about suffering and how to cope with it and much is to be gained from allowing one era to shed its light on another – this shiur aims to draws Chazal’s thoughts on catastrophe, and specifically the destruction of the Temple, into conversation with 20th and 21st Century responses to the Holocaust.
